What's the point of Cymatics.org?
Cymatics.org was born out of Peter Gabriels Growing up Tour 2003. We were looking
for a way to represent sound visually that could be used to create real-time visuals
triggered by the musicians on stage. Peter suggested we try Cymatics - something
he'd wanted to use on his previous tour [check the Cymatics image from Gabriels
Secret World Live CD]. After the Growing Up Tour finished we decided to take
everything we'd learnt from creating the tour visuals, rebuild and refine the basic
design of our original Mk I Cymatics rig and then share this online with other
sci-artists.

Will Cymatics 'spell out' the correct letters when reacting with
Sanskrit and Hebrew vowels?
The question we get emailed the most! Will Cymatics reproduce the exact Sanskrit
and Hebrew vowel shapes when those sounds are spoken through a Cymatics
dish? The short answer is no.
Cymatics images are entirely dependant on pitch. The same sound e.g a sinewave
played through a Cymatics dish will create two radically different patterns when
raised or lowered by just a few semitones.
Because there's no standardized pitch for speaking Hebrew & Sanskrit vowels, or
any vowel in any language in fact, a male voice speaking one vowel sound will be
at a completely different pitch to a female voice speaking the same vowel.
The resultant image will also look completely different.

Are your images computer generated?
Our images are created using simple tones & water, that's all. We crop &
colorize/colour balance the images before we post them up on this site

Why don't our Cymaitics images look like yours?
There are so many factors at work when you create Cymatics images, the dish
size, depth of liquid, choice of sound, the power of your amplifier, the viscosity of
the liquid you're using. All of these combine to create unique images that won't
necessarily look like anybody else's. |

What kind of sounds work best with Cymatics?
Long sustained sounds work best, rather than short percussive noises.
Cymatics images take time to form because they require a sustained chunk
of energy to resolve the pattern. Long drones, simple tones [sine & square
waves] or any other sustained noise will create the best results.
